Laser Technology As A Boom To The Dental Practice

Laser Technology As A Boom To The Dental Practice

With the continuing development of new lasers

, there is an observable transformation of the practice of dentistry as patients' anxieties are waning. The laser works accurately, swiftly and safely on teeth and gums with the least discomfort, even without the use of anesthesia.

Many patients who have undergone dental laser procedures rave about their experience. Once a skeptic, a female patient went for cavity treatment, and to her surprise she did not feel the slightest of pain even with the absence of anesthesia.

The high cost of lasers and a conservative view among some dentists are constricting the market for lasers. Many dentists cringe at the idea of spending $40,000 for just one hard tissue laser when they are able to buy all the dental equipment they need with a lesser amount of $30,000 or even less.

Hopefully in the next five years or so, experts affirm that every dental clinic shall have been equipped with a laser to keep pace with patients' increasing dental needs. Demand from patients is a key factor in encouraging competition among manufacturers so that prices will go down. Peers are expected to identify with the group, hence pressure from the group is something that cannot be ignored.

Patients can tell whether their dentist is good or bad and they do tell their friends. Contented patients like to flaunt their captivating smiles and the dentist who made them possible. Laser technology has brought a new approach to the field of dentistry

The mid 1950s saw the introduction of the air turbine drill. Much swifter than the belt driven drill, it can whirl at the high speed of 150,000 rounds per minute. For many dentists, this marked the dawn of better dental practice.

No less than the president of the prestigious Academy of Laser Dentistry attended the maiden class in high speed drills. Learning how high speed drills work was a new learning experience and so, the students had to buy their individual hand pieces for the drills.

The president quipped that there's no way you would go back to a Chevy if you've been driving a Ferrari for the past two years.

With his first laser which he acquired in 1990, his periodontal work was made more efficient and reliable. There is no concern for bleeding and inflammation because the laser cauterizes, instead of cutting through, soft tissue.

Although some dentists are now using lasers, many others are still clinging to their good old air turbine drills because of high prices. According to the dentist, he fully understands why many medical practitioners are not open to technological innovations.

Some dentists argue that there is no need to spend more for something that has the same function. In most cases, anesthesia is not needed, hence saving time for both the dentist and the patient.

The laser craters the tooth surface in a way that will ensure the perfect bonding of the filling material to the tooth without disturbing healthy enamel.
