Sometimes, an individual's mouth does not have enough room for wisdom teeth to grow in. If your mouth is quite small, your wisdom teeth may push your other teeth forward, causing a crooked smile. In some instances, wisdom teeth grow in crooked or partially, and must be removed. Consulting with your dentist will help you make an informed decision.
The Removal Process
If you decide to have your wisdom teeth removed, you are in for a long, and often difficult process. Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure, and it should be treated like a surgical procedure, as far as planning for the recovery goes. After a surgery, you can't expect to be on your feet and fully functional again after only a day. You need to prepare for a few days of rest and relaxation in order to recover from your wisdom teeth extraction surgery.
When you decide to get your wisdom teeth pulled, your dentist will most likely request that you don't eat for 12 hours before your surgical procedure. On the day of your surgery, you will visit the dentist and be anesthetized completely. You will be given pain numbing medication in your mouth, but you will also be given a gas that will put you to sleep during the surgery. The dentist will then cut your gums open and remove your wisdom teeth.
After the teeth have been extracted, your dentist will then place your gum tissue back over the holes and use stitches to close up the incisions. The wisdom tooth removal surgery itself is very simple; however, the recovery process is sometimes difficult.
You will be required to irrigate the holes left in your mouth for several days after your surgery to prevent food from becoming impacted in the holes. You may also experience a great deal of pain after the anesthesia medication wears off. Your doctor will prescribe pain medication for you, and it is important to take this pain medication diligently. If you follow your dentist's advice, the recovery process will be much easier to handle.
