Kashmir Travel: A Study About Mughal Influence

Situated in the northernmost part of India, Kashmir is often recognized with sobriquets

such as Paradise on Earth and Kingdom of Heaven owing to its peaceful ambience and natural beauty. Tourists scouting Kashmir comes across various attractions that stands tantamount to the beauty of heaven. Mughal gardens situated on each side of Dal Lake in Srinagar are among the most popular attractions in Kashmir. Lined with verdant Chinar trees and abounded with variety of flora species, these gardens were built in Islamic style of architecture with particular influence of Persian Char Bagh style. In this article, I will dish out information regarding Mughal gardens which forms an important aspect of Jammu and Kashmir travel.

Shalimar Bagh

Located in the northeastern side of Dal Lake, Shalimar Bagh is a celebrated Mughal garden built by Emperor Shahjahan for his beloved wife Nur Jahan. The history of its name dates back to 6th century CE when king Pravarsena II ruled Kashmir. Although the garden was exclusively built as a summer palace of Jahangir and Nur Jahan, it subsequently became a pleasure hangout for Pathan and Sikh governors. The layout of the Shalimar Bagh was prepared on the grounds of Persian Char Bagh wherein the garden is divided by four walkways with water source in the centre. The garden boasts of three terraces which include Diwan-e-Aam, Diwan-i-Khas and Zenana garden respectively. The most unique feature of this Bagh is black pavilion on the top terrace inscribed with Persian couplet saying If there is a paradise on earth, it is this, it is this, it is this.

Located on the eastern side of Dal Lake, in the backdrop of Zabarwan Mountains, Nishat Bagh is the second largest Mughal garden in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. True to its name, Nishant Bagh put forth delightful views of the lake underneath the snow-clad Pir Panjal mountain range. Though the layout of Nishant was initially conceptualized on typical Char Bagh style, it was refashioned to adjust with the geography and water source of the chosen site. Instead of being divided by four square walkways with water source in centre, it was extended with long walkways giving it a rectangular shape with 548 meters length and 338 meters width. The 12 terraces of this garden represent 12 zodiac signs.

Chashme Shahi Bagh

Built in1632 by Emperor Shah Jahan, Chashme Shahi Bagh is a tastefully laid out terrace garden, which offer breathtaking views of Dal lake and surrounding Zabarwan Mountains. It is divided into three parts with fountains and waterfalls located in the middle. It is believed that the water spring in the garden has curative powers.

Pari Mahal

The foundation stone of Pari Mahal was laid out by Dara Shiko the eldest son of Shah Jahan, in reverence of his Sufi teacher-Mulla Shah. Once a Buddhist monastery, it was converted into an astrology school by Dara Shiko. It strategic location on the spur of the hill makes it visible from most places in Srinagar. The garden is studded with number of fascinating fountains that add to its beauty.

The aforementioned four gardens are the only living symbols of Mughal culture in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from rich flora species, these gardens are bejeweled with artificial water channels, Mughal style pavilions, ornate fountains and manicured landscapes.
