Jack O'Lantern and the Devil: A Halloween Story

Jack O'Lantern and the Devil: A Halloween Story

Here is a little surprise you can set up this Halloween

. Put up two card tables side by side with a small gap large enough to put your hand through. Now cover the top and sides of the table with crepe paper and cut a small slit so your hand can reach through. Then line up a sweet dish on the table top. When children come to the front door on Halloween's eve, pull the front door open with a string. They will see the sweets dish for a moment. Now pop your hand through, grab a sweet and offer it to the kids. This will be pretty scary, but to be expected on this type of occasion.

Jack O-Lantern is a character based on the persona of Jack the trickster. He was a nasty small minded chap who was drinking at the bar one night when the devil entered the room. He had come for Jack whose time was up. But Jack managed to convince the devil to have a drink before they both went to hell. When Jack was due to pay, he had no money. So he asked the devil to become a sixpence so he could pay. When the devil obliged, Jack stuffed the sixpence into a purse and trapped him. Then he did a deal with the devil and made him promise not to come back for ten years. The devil agreed. Jack thought "I'll transform my character in those ten years and God will not let me go to hell." But in those 10 years he changed not at all.

The devil re-appeared on cue. Jack said to the devil "Let's take few apples with us on our journey."

Then he swiftly climbed an apple tree after placing a cross on its trunk with a knife. Again the devil was trapped and he promised not to come back for Jack for another 10 years. Finally Jack died and went to heaven but was refused entry. So he went to hell but the devil bolted the door on him. He had promised not come for him for ten years. The devil threw him a burning coal to light his way back home. And Jack has been wandering around ever since.
