The team was dealt the news that veteran Safety Jamie Silva will be out for the rest of the season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee, which he injured in the Colts' first preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Aug. 15.Silva had been with the Colts since he entered the league in 2008. In two seasons, he played in 25 games and tallied 47 tackles and two passes defended. The Colts placed him on the waived-injured list along with injured rookie cornerback Donye McCleskey. If they clear waivers, both will be placed on injured reserve. In response, the Colts decided to add safety Terrell Skinner, a rookie.
Even though the team lost Silva during the game, the Colts' first preseason game showed promise for the coming season. The Colts lost the game 37-17, but the score doesn't tell the story of the starters. To get the full picture of how the starters fared, it is worth looking at their performance in the first quarter of the game.
Quarterback Peyton Manning only played the first quarter, but he still managed to complete eight out of 10 passes for 91 yards. The scoring in the first quarter was one-sided, as the Colts were the only ones to tally points. The first came from a 21-yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri. After a solid drive, the Colts added a touchdown to their total with a seven-yard run by Joseph Addai.

The Colts will finish the preseason with games against the Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers and Cincinnati Bengals. Likely, they will be without another star for all of those games. Star center Jeff Saturday underwent knee surgery and is expected to miss between two and six weeks. The Pro Bowler has been with the Indianapolis Colts since 1999. Since then, he has been one of the team's anchors on offense. Interestingly enough, Saturday entered the league as a rookie free agent with the Baltimore Ravens in 1998, and the Colts picked him up after he was waived by the Ravens.
