New England Patriots Tickets - Patriots Add Players In Light Of Injuries
Just one game into the preseason, the New England Patriots are already dealing with
a few serious injuries that have required the Pats to court replacements. One of the reasons that the Patriots are considered one of the perennial powerhouses of the league, though, is their depth, so if any team could survive a series of big injuries, it is the Patriots.First, the defense took a hit when defensive end Ty Warren decided to get surgery to correct a hip injury, which placed him on injured reserve. Warren was already out of most of the team's practices, after he suffered an injury during training camp. He expressed a desire to have a long career after the injury, which was his reasoning for opting for the surgery now. Warren has been with the Patriots since he joined the league as the team's first-round draft pick in 2003. Since then, he has been a top contributor for the team. Last season, he had 46 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.
Around the same time that Warren announced his surgery, the Patriots' defense received a boost when linebacker Derrick Burgess decided to return to the league and play for New England. Burgess joined the Patriots after a long career with the Oakland Raiders last season, but he was a no-show for practices while he contemplated retirement. Now he has decided to return for the 2010 season. The Pro Bowler was with the Raiders from 2005 to 2009 and prior to that he was with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2001 to 2004. Last season with the Patriots, he played in all 16 games and started six, tallying 35 tackles, five sacks and one forced fumble.
The offense also took a hit when wide receiver Torry Holt was placed on injured reserve for a knee injury that will require surgery. The 2010 season is Holt's first with the Patriots, and he added a deep level of talent to the team. He is a multiple Pro Bowl selection, among many other honors. Holt started his career as a standout with the St. Louis Rams in 1999 and he remained in St. Louis until 2008. Last season he played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he amassed 722 yards. Near the same time that Holt was placed on injured reserve, the Patriots also released rookie defensive back Ross Ventrone.
The Patriots responded to Holt's injury by re-signing wide receiver Buddy Farnham and linebacker Brian Simmons. The Patriots picked up Farnham from Brown University as a rookie free agent in May, but released him on Aug. 9. Simmons was also a rookie free agent and was a standout at Oklahoma.
Those with New England Patriots tickets likely let out a collective sigh of relief because of coach Bill Belichick's comments following the team's first preseason game against the New Orleans Saints. During the game, star quarterback Tom Brady was seen with tape on his fingers, but Belichick assured that it wasn't a serious injury to the star. Brady missed virtually the entire 2008 season with an injury, and he was key to the Patriots' championships a few years back.
