Since foreigners and tourists are generally considered fair game and an easy target, steer clear of any types of clothing that makes you look like a tourist, as this is a target for would-be robbers to descend upon. By projecting an image of a local or at least someone who has spent some time in the area, you are that much less likely to be robbed and you have less to worry about as far as having your valuables stolen. In this way, you can reduce the threat as much as possible.
As for the valuables themselves, the last thing you want to do is keep them in a purse or a wallet. In many cases, the oldest ways are the most effective and keeping money in your shoe or in a money belt can be somewhat safe and secure. If you absolutely have to keep your valuables on you, while it is somewhat undignified, many security experts recommend keeping valuables in your pants (just not your back pocket). Oddly enough, thieves and robbers are much less likely to dig around in their victim's pants than any other part of their clothing. Socks and shoes are fair game, but quite often, other places are overlooked and undisturbed. While it might sound strange, there is always the chance that you could be robbed and that they might look in your shoes, so consider hiding your wallet some place else if possible.
