The last action, while controversial at the time, turned out to be the kick-start Harare needed. A high level of foreign investment and an urban renewal sympathetic to cultural values saw the return of the colourful markets and ethnic cafes and bars, but without the shanty towns and ghettoes. Today, Harare is once more a city thriving on culture and commerce, with renovated heritage buildings standing side-by-side with new business blocks.
