Hale Irwin wins the 1974 U.S. Open golf tournament
The US Open is the biggest golf tournament that takes place on a yearly basis in the United States. The tournament is one of 4 tournaments on the PGA tournament that are known as Major tournaments. These tournaments include the US Open, British Open, The Masters and the PGA Championship. While the other events are tournaments that a golfer may miss if he doesn't feel like golfing in a tournament on one particular week, these tournament cannot be missed by any golfer as they hope to win at least one(if not many) of these Major tournaments over the course of their careers.
The US Open tournament in 1974 will go down as one of the classic tournaments. It is known as the Massacre at Winged Foot. The tournament was a difficult one to play as the course was known for being a particularly tough course. There were a couple of golfers that are at the forefront of the names remembered from this tournament. These golfers were Hale Irwin and Tom Watson. This tournament did a lot to help the reputation of one of these golfers, but unfortunately it was harm to the reputation of one of the other ones.
Unfortunately, Tom Watson had somewhat of a bad reputation previous to this tournament. He was known as a golfer that would golf well for a few rounds, but he was prone to falling apart as the tournament came to its close. He had another opportunity to change that notion in this tournament.
Share: Unfortunately Watson was still unable to come through with a victory in this game. In fact, he had a full fledged collapse that will be remembered as being historically bad. He finished the last round with a 79 after putting up a 69 in the third round. Despite this awful collapse, he still managed to finish within the top 5 of the tournament. This was the first time in his career that he managed a finish this good in a Major tournament.
Irwin came through and dominated in the tournament and really earned a reputation for being a golfer that could play anywhere. He had a great finish to the tournament and managed to finish with the lowest score of any golfer in the tournament. Despite having the lowest score, it was still not a pretty finish for Irwin. He had a 7-over par score at 287 on the tournament. This was one of the highest scores to ever win a US Open tournament and will be remembered as one of the most difficult tournaments in the history of the PGA Tour.
Irwin gained 35 thousand dollars for his first place finish. Forrest Fezler was the 2nd best golfer in the tournament, finishing two strokes behind Irwin. He brought home 18 thousand dollars for his accomplishments.
Third place finished in a tie between Lou Graham and Bert Yancey. The two golfers finished at 10 over par and brought home 11,500 dollars each for their great play in the tough tournament.
