If you really want to learn French, you're going to need to know some basic French words that all French speakers use.
Let's say you're meeting up with your friend Francois for a coffee in a Paris coffee shop. Let's do a little role-playing and go through some basic words in a real conversation.
You walk into the coffee shop, sit down with Francois and he says.
Francois: Bonjour! ("bonjour" means "good day" and is generally used before noon time. But basically it means "hello".)
You: Bonjour! Ca va? ("ca va" literally means "it goes". So you're asking "it goes?" In other words, you want confirmation that things in Francois' life are moving along just fine so you say "ca va?")
Francois: Oui, ca va. E tu? ("yes, everything's good. How about you?")
You: Oui, ca va! Qu'est-ce que c'est? [pointing to Francois' drink] (Qu'est-ce que c'est? means "what is this?")
Francois: Un caf au lait ("caf" means coffee and "au lait" means with milk. So Francois is drinking a latte.)
You: Ah. Fantastique! ("Fantastic!")
In this simple conversation, you saw how you can interact with a French speaker without knowing the language perfectly, but just by working with what you have.
One helpful thing for English speakers is that English shares some common roots and structures with French, which makes learning to speak French easier.
Most people think French is hard but it really isn't! We just think that because of the way we were "taught" languages back in high school. Instead of language learning being this amazing, exciting multisensory experience, we were forced to learn grammar and vocabulary and graded for it! Yuck!
The most important thing in learning a language is actually to experience strong emotions in association with it. That's why dating a native speaker can make a speaker out of someone who knew nothing of a language in a matter of months. It's also why sitting in school mindlessly drilling vocabulary has no kind of positive or unique emotional impact whatsoever!
So the best way to create that emotional connection is to immerse yourself by visiting the country or create an immersion environment at home.
