Esophageal Cancer Complications

The esophageal cancer caused in the esophagus (a muscular tube present between mouth

and stomach) may cause a number of uncomfortable and potentially dangerous complications such as weight loss, anemia etc. If the symptoms of the disease are diagnosed earlier then the complications associated with esophageal cancer can be managed.

As the esophageal cancer increases and passes stage by stage, the severity increases along with many complications. The most common complication of the esophageal cancer is the difficulty in swallowing which may lead to total obstruction in the esophagus. The swallowing process becomes painful and difficult as a result of the growing tumor which makes it uncomfortable to eat.

The other common complications may include weight loss, anemia, tracheo esophageal fistulas, metastases, coughing, bleeding in the esophagus, cancer pain, pneumonia etc. If the size of the tumor becomes too large which does not allow enough food to pass through the esophagus then weight loss can occur. The esophageal cancer will also affect the metabolism which may also lead to weight loss. This makes maintaining the patients weight difficult.

If the esophageal cancer causes heavy bleeding then anemia can occur. Fatigue and paleness are the symptoms of anemia. Chemotherapy can also cause anemia and the esophageal cancer people with anemia can be managed with red blood cell transfusions.

The esophageal cancer can also cause bleeding in patients. Though the bleeding is usually gradual, it can also be sudden and severe at times. During that time it requires surgery or Endoscopic procedures. The advanced stage of esophageal cancer may also cause pain and appropriate treatments are required for this.

When a tumor is blocking the esophageal track and the food enters, it forces the liquid down the wind pipe; aspiration pneumonia (a lung infection caused by breathing in foreign material) may develop.

Fistulas are the holes develop in the area between the wind pipe and the esophagus. The holes will allow the food and drinks to escape down the wind pipe into the lungs. Esophageal cancer can erode the esophageal wall and creates a hole in the wind pipe which is known as tracheoesophageal fistula. This hole will cause severe and sudden coughing, choking and gagging while swallowing. These tracheo esophageal fistulas can be managed with surgery or by placing stent (a small tube covering the fistula) in the esophagus to keep food out of the wind pipe.

In the advanced stage of esophageal cancer, the tumor may spread or metastasize to different parts of the body. It may spread initially to lymph nodes and other organs which surround the esophagus and eventually throughout the body to liver, lungs, brain etc. the cancer which has been metastasized to other parts is still treatable but it is often more difficult to treat than the original cancer.
