Egnyte Online Backup Review: Is It Worth Your Cash?
Egnyte has some nice features built into it. It's primarily designed for business users and is one of the many cloud storage providers that offer online backup services.
Egnyte plans are designed around the needs of businesses. There really isn't a plan designed for an individual user. For example, the lowest-priced plan is $24.99 per month for 150 gigabytes of storage. This plan isn't the cheapest out there and it's not the most generous in terms of space. One thing it does have going for it, however, is that it has a generous 2.5 gigabyte file size limit on uploads at this level.
Egnyte offers the standard range of services for cloud storage providers. Files can be accessed from anywhere and FTP capabilities are included with plans. Permissions are flexible and can be adjusted to a granular level so that you can control who has access to what. File sharing can be done over the system, as well, so there is a degree of flexibility with Egnyte that should make its business demographic happy with what they get, in most regards.
Pros
Egnyte has some very large storage options that will be useful to those who have corporate servers that they need to back up. It also has some enterprise-level features that will make it easier for IT professionals to centralize the control over their resources. The granular permissions are nice features for IT professionals, as well, and will be welcome additions among those for whom security is the most pressing concern.
Cons
Egnyte does not have a plan that's suitable for home users. Its lowest-priced offering doesn't really offer enough storage for the money compared to what other providers out there offer. Egnyte is clearly looking for business from the corporate sector, where the smaller sizes of storage space will not be particularly useful and where the clients will, almost by default, need something larger. The permissions control on the file system that you upload are nice but, if you're not a corporate user or an IT professional, they likely won't be all that interesting.
Analysis
Egnyte offers a reliable service, a good interface and plenty of other things that corporate professionals will like. The storage plans are clearly oriented towards the upper end of server storage needs and not toward the needs of those who need to backup a computer or two in their own home.
Conclusion
Egnyte offers a decent service but it fails to differentiate itself from the competition out there enough to demonstrate why somebody with other options should choose Egnyte. The service is reliable and the tools that are provided by the company are intuitive enough for anybody to figure out but, for corporate users, there are better options out there that offer a higher level of control over the backup process and that do so at a better price. Egnyte is worth looking at but it's not likely to be the service that impresses you the most from among all of the available options.
