The Historic Pioneering Family Holiday Resort Is Still Going Strong
It is just over 75 years since one of the most important developments in the history
of the domestic package holidays in the UK the opening of Billy Butlin's first purpose-built holiday resort, in the Lincolnshire coastal town of Skegness.Even before this resort arrived in the town, Skegness was renowned as a retreat for working people from a large part of the Midlands and east of England. The resort's heyday was the early 1920s when, thanks to the direct railway links which the town enjoyed with the Midlands, via Grantham and Nottingham, more than 400,000 people regularly arrived at the resort on special excursion trains for a day's stay or longer.
It did not take long after its opening, however, for the resort to become synonymous with the family holiday resort which had grown up within it, and although this is still the main draw for many visitors, lots more still come to the resort, and the neighbouring ones of Ingoldmells and Chapel St Leonards, to enjoy the thoroughly British delights which they offer.
Visitors today will still find candy floss and ice cream stalls aplenty, and can still enjoy a ride on the resort's famous donkeys, as well as a wealth of fairground rides which cater for all ages.
Perhaps one of Skegness' greatest assets is that, unlike many other resorts which are sited in hilly areas with steep slopes down to sea level, it is almost completely flat. So it's easy for anyone of any age to get around, and the sweeping views of the beach and the North Sea beyond make for a tranquil backdrop to a massive array of fun and exciting activities.
A family holiday resort today, of course, is vastly different to one of even a couple of decades ago. But as tastes change, so the managers of these resorts have striven to keep pace, which means that now, attractions such as spas, all-star entertainment shows, restaurants and catering facilities, and of course the all-weather indoor Splash Waterworld complex which also offer lots of other weather-proof attractions and activities for the whole family give families with children of all ages a choice of things to do that they just won't find on one site anywhere else.
The great British holiday has thrived thanks to this ability to cater for visitors of all ages, and, as economic conditions put many families under pressure, the fact that a the whole family can enjoy a brilliant holiday with so much included in the price means that its appeal shows no sign of waning.
