This was the base of Omani Sultan who ruled the area and had turned it into an agricultural ground. The Sultan planted spices and cloves. Selous Game Reserve is located in the remote and rarely visited part of the country. However, it is the largest wildlife reserve and takes more than 5% of Tanzania's total area.
