Hua Hin's image as a sleepy fishing village was soon transformed. Other royal families and the elite of Thailand started acquiring prime beach front properties to build their own summer retreats. Hua Hin was converted into a beach resort with Thai royalties as patrons.
Located some 200 kilometers from Bangkok, Hua HIn was accessible by both trains and cars. The train station in Hua Hin is located in one of the two major streets of the town that lead directly to the beach. The Royal Waiting Room was built separately from the main train station for the exclusive use of King Rama VII and his entourage. The Royal Railway Hotel was built adjacent to the station and was designed and patterned after the old Siam architectural style, same as the Royal Waiting Room. The first golf course in Thailand is in Hua Hin.
Hua Hin had its royal and glorious moments during the reign of King Rama VII. However, the effects of World War II had its toll on the place that for a time Hua Hin was forgotten. Pattaya was slowly but surely hugging the spot as the "in" beach in the Gulf of Thailand as American soldiers on R&R gravitated towards the livelier beach destination. Hua Hin was slowly rebuilt as indefatigable "backpackers" re-discovered the place. Soon more hotels, condominiums, shopping areas and local and international restaurants were established. Dusit Thani Hotel is one of the top hotels in the area.
One can enjoy viewing the beautiful palaces and villas of Thailand's crme de la crme. Most of the summer retreats were built in the first quarter of the 20th century and it is quite interesting to note the merging of classic Siam architecture with the prevailing international style known as Art Deco. The train station in Hua Hin is the oldest and most beautiful in Thailand. A picture with the train station as the backdrop is a must do when in Hua Hin.
The beaches in Hua Hin are at par with the beaches in Phuket in terms of water sports as snorkeling, diving, para-sailing, jet-skiing, wind surfing and even deep sea fishing are offered in Hua Hin. There are seven world class golf courses in Thailand. It can be said that Hua Hin is a golfing holiday destination as golfers from all over the world troop to Hua Hin to play. Well-maintained and of international standards, Hua Hin links have the advantage of low green fees and a view of the sparkling sea.
