Brushing should be performed with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day and preferably after every meal and snack.

Usage and maintenance of Brush:

Effective brushing must clean each outer tooth surface, inner tooth surface, and the flat chewing surfaces of the back teeth. To clean the outer and inner surfaces, the toothbrush should be held at a 45-degree angle against the gums and moved backend forth in short strokes (no more than one tooth width distance).To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, the toothbrush should be held vertically and the bristles at the tip (called the toe of the brush) moved gently up and down against each tooth. To clean the chewing surfaces of the large back teeth, the brush should be held flat and moved back and forth. Finally, the tongue should also be brushed using a back-to-front sweeping motion to remove food particles and bacteria that may sour the breath.

Toothbrushes wear out and should be replaced every three months. The best toothbrushes to use have soft, rounded, nylon bristles. The size and shape should allow for reaching all tooth surfaces easily.

Flossing:

Flossing is a dental hygiene practice in which a length of fine thread or ribbon is used to remove food deposits from between the teeth. This should be done after using a toothbrush as brushing the teeth can remove most but not all of the plaque which forms as a sticky coating on the teeth. Plaque can also form between the teeth and this is why flossing is very important as it will remove this along with any remaining food particles.

Many people don't bother with flossing but not doing so means missing an important area of your teeth with no care. And this can have long term consequences. If food particles between the teeth are not removed then they will damage the teeth to the extent of causing gum disease and tooth decay.

Flossing does not take long, is easy to do and can easily fit into your daily oral routine. There are many different flossing products and techniques but it is important to find the one that works best for you.

Prevention:

Regular visits to the dentist at least every six months to monitor dental and oral health.

Regular professional dental cleaning fluoride treatments, sealant application and scaling to help to scrape off the hardened plaque (tartar).

Diagnostic services go for X-ray imaging and oral cancer screening.

Treatment services fillings, crowns and bridges to restore and retain teeth.

Foods to be avoided:

Avoid Foods with a high concentration of sugar cakes, ice cream, honey, etc.

Acidic drinks with a low pH value can damage the tooth enamel.

Sticky foods these do not get washed away from the tooth surface easily by the saliva, hence increasing the exposure of teeth to sugar and acids and, consequently, tooth decay.

Foods which are good for oral health:

Try to eat fruits that are rich in vitamin C. Lemons, limes, papayas, mangoes and kiwi fruits are some of the most highly recommended.

Rich foods without sugar milk, yoghurt, rice, meat, fish, fruits, etc.

Consume sweets only with main meals and not between meals saliva production is increased during main meals, thereby neutralising most of the acids and lessening the hazard.

Avoid sugary or acidic drinks between meals, and drink milk or water instead.
