Choose Koh Samui for the Ideal Holiday Destination

There are many beautiful destinations in Thailand with dazzling surroundings, good food, relaxed atmosphere and activities and entertainment galore. Ko Samui is one of them, an island located in the Gulf of Thailand it has a natural landscape of palm lined coastline, coconut trees and virgin rainforest.

The 3rd largest island in the country it's actually part of Ang Thong National Marine Park which consists of more than 80 islands many of which are uninhabited, and Koh Samui is the largest. The island is small enough to drive around in just a few hours but has a wealth of hotels, restaurants and bars and activities geared towards the thousands of tourists who arrive here every week.

The island was undeveloped right up until the 70's when it was discovered by independent travellers and backpackers who enjoyed its solitude and deserted beach lifestyle. There were no roads at the time and most of the interior of the island was covered in dense jungle, all the island had to offer its visitors apart from the dramatic sandy beaches and fresh delicious seafood was a few wooden bungalows for accommodation.Choose Koh Samui for the Ideal Holiday Destination

By the time the '90s arrived the choices in accommodation had grown and the islands inhabitants realized the potential the island had to offer visitors to its shores. These days it's up there with Phuket as one of the most popular island destinations in Thailand as people flock here for its natural beauty, sandy beaches, lagoons and scenic waterfalls, tall coconut trees, glittering coral and clear ocean waters.

The weather in Koh Samui is often different to weather in other parts of the country so it's best to check it out before you make any hotel bookings. From April until around September it remains quite dry with the driest months from January to March, whilst October to December it rains a lot.Choose Koh Samui for the Ideal Holiday Destination

There is a small privately run airport on Koh Samui, Thailand owned by Bangkok Airways and until recently the only airline operating flights to the island, however 2 years ago Thai Airways also started to run a few flights to/from Bangkok. If you're coming in from an international destination then a connection from the capital to Samui makes sense as it's much quicker than any other transport methods. You can also reach the island by bus and boat which takes longer but is a lot cheaper.

Once on the island it's small enough to get around very easily and quickly. You can hire mopeds quite cheaply although if you don't have any previous experience riding a bike on the roads can be quite hazardous and it might be better to get a cab if you need to go any distance. There are also songthaews available which are small pick-ups that run the main local routes and are very cheap, just stand at the side of the road and flag them down.

There are all types of accommodation options available and really your hardest decision is going to be which beach to base yourself at. Mae Nam and the South Coast are very quiet and peaceful whilst Bophut and Choeng Mon offer beautiful sunsets and tranquil hideaway retreats. If you want to party every night then Chaweng and Lamai might be more your style, popular with those who like a lively scene they offer restaurants, bars and entertainment and souvenir shops.

You can find lots of information about koh samui hotels online with websites providing valuable information on hotels and apartments in each beach area and the facilities and services available. It's a quick and straight-forward way to find accommodation and you can book your hotel online too if you have a credit card. Samui is a destination where the daytime is for chilling out on the beach and the night for dining under the stars and beach side restaurants - this is one place that offers a tropical retreat and a warm charm to all its visitors.
