China Entering into North American Shale Gas Plays: To Emulate the Success in its Own Shale Gas Development
Summary
Chinese companies are planning multi-billion dollar investments in the North American shale industry via joint ventures to gain operating knowledge, insight into cost structures, experience with cash flow profiles and preferential access to technology and business processes, while earning an attractive return on capital. This will allow Chinese oil and gas players to develop their own shale gas expertise and produce gas from Chinas shale gas resources which are estimated to be around 45 trillion cubic metres. If China is able to successfully develop its shale gas reserves, the country will reduce its dependence on imports significantly as compared to around 40% of its total energy consumption. As a result, the country may emulate US as a leading shale gas producer with abundant natural gas to serve its domestic needs.
