The two extinct volcanoes, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, are situated in the center of the island. These are the highest points with a height of 727 meters. These two peaks seem as if they are piercing the azure blue sky.
The original name of this paradise in Tahitian language was Pora Pora meaning the First Born. Some of the early transcriptions of the 18th or 19th century describe it as Bola Bolla. Most of the tourist attractions in this place are water based.
The island boasts of one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world which is filled with tropical fish and a variety of shades of blues and greens. It is one of French Polynesia's most popular tourist destinations, second only to the main island of Tahiti.
