Nagpur is the home of the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabhas annual winter session. This city is the political and commercial center of the Maharashtra state's East Vidarbha region. It was founded by the Gond people many years back. The city later became a part of the Maratha Empire under the rule of the Bhonsles.

During the 19th century, the British East India Company took over Nagpur and made it the capital city of Berar and the central provinces. The Shri Mahalaxmi Devi and the Sri Poddareshwar Ram Mandir of Koradi are the most significant Hindu Temples in the region. There are various religious events celebrated in this city annually. Like all the locals in India, the people in Nagpur celebrate their Hindu festivals with enthusiasm and fervor. Some examples of Hindu Festivals include Holi, Dussera and Diwali. There are also celebrations that last several days. These long celebrations are usually held during the Durga Puja and Ganesh Chaturthi festivals. This is even though they are only celebrated by a small population of the city.
