, your plastic surgeon will carefully close each incision and will suture the sides of your septum together. The meticulous closure will allow for better healing and will make nasal packing unnecessary in the vast majority of cases. There are certain specific technical considerations that will call for the need of nasal packing in a small minority of cases after a nasal contouring procedure.After the surgery is completed, the nose will be carefully cleaned on the inside and on the outside. The nasal structures will be carefully and meticulously compressed in order to reduce the swelling and bleeding. Special tapes will be placed on the surface of the patient's nose along with a custom molded nasal splint to further improve the shaping. This will also help in reducing the swelling of the nose that will commonly occur after the surgery. Again, internal nasal splints of packs will unlikely be used as these structures will be held in place firmly with meticulously placed sutures. These sutures will always dissolve on their own over time.
The splint and tapes for the patient's nose will be placed there for roughly one week. A small dressing will accompany the patient home over the bottom half of their nose which will typically be required only for the first several hours of the day after the procedure. The patient will receive specific post-operative instructions from their plastic surgery office after the surgery.
The splint will be removed roughly one week after the procedure. Most of the swelling will have resolved within the first few weeks after the nose job surgery. However, there may be some small amounts of swelling that are persistent for many months or even a year or more after the surgery. The most subtle changes may take up to a year or more to see following the procedure. The decision to have a nasal contouring procedure performed on you will be personal. You will have to decide if the benefits of the procedure will fulfill your goals and if the risks and potential complications are acceptable to you.

A nasal contouring procedure is a safe procedure, but it does carry some risks. Complications will be rare, but they may include rupture of small surface vessels of the nose, poor wound healing, bleeding, asymmetry, infection, changes in sensation (numbness), nasal septum perforation (a hole in the nasal septum), pain, unfavorable scarring, changes in breathing, skin contour irregularities or discoloration or extrusion of the sutures. Due to the complex nature of the rhinoplasty procedure, a revisional surgery may be required. But that is unlikely. A nasal revision will usually be small and will typically be a touch-up.
