Motion sickness is a common problem in people travelling by car

, train, airplane and most specially boats. It happens when repetitive small movements sent mix signals to the brain. Our brain gets signals from our inner ears, eyes, muscles and joints. Therefore when our eyes say one thing about the position of our bodywhile the inner ear balance sends something else, we will feel nausea, become sweaty and sometimes vomit.

However, it is not always motion that triggers this type of feeling. Have you ever felt queasy when you smell food and petrol? Have you ever anticipated about motion sickness and felt anxiety about it? Have you read a book and suddenly felt dizzy?

Most people who travel have felt motion sickness even once. Some are more susceptible than others. For example, children who are 2-12 years old are more susceptible while toddlers are relatively immune to it. Women, most specially those who are pregnant, menstruating or on hormones are more likely to have dizzy spells.

If you a travelling in a ship make sure that you go out on deck a lot for fresh air and stay away from smell of fumes. While on deck, focus your eyes on the horizon or something that is static rather than on something that moves. Watching the waves will make you feel dizzy and nauseated. If you are in a situation wherein you cannot go out for air, make sure you find a seat in the middle of the ship on a lower deck because this is where the ship moves the least.

If you are prone to motion sickness in a plane, be sure to ask for a seat over the wings, where the plane is more stable. Tilt your seat back when it is already allowed, close your eyes and rest your head on the headrest.

You can avoid or lessen the chance of having motion sickness while in transit by avoiding heavy meals and alcohol before travelling. For cases when you are sure you are very prone to this type of situation, you can ask your pharmacist for a prescription of anti-sickness medicines. These are usually taken before travel, according to instructions. This will give the medicine a chance to be absorbed by the body. Some people also swear by ginger or peppermint remedies.
