A Brief View of the American Revolutionary War

This war actually resulted from escalating political tensions between colonists who are not in favor or taxes as well as other laws and the Parliament of Great Britain. Colonists mentioned that these laws were illegitimate and oppressive.

Colonies also responded to Parliamentary actions. It included the following:

? Petitions to King George

? The Boston Tea Party of 1773.

As response to these, the Parliament sent British soldiers to Boston. Then they appointed Gen. Thomas Gage as Massachusetts governor.

To seize some suspected rebel armory, Gov. Gage sent troops to Boston in April 1775. It is at this time that many "minutemen" or rebel militia confronted British troops in Lexington. This resulted to the Battles of Lexington & Concord which started the war.

In 1776, to offer their help and support, Spain, France and the Dutch Republic began to secretly provide ammunitions, weapons and supplies to the revolutionaries. Following the success of the British, the war came to a stand off. They used their superiority in naval planning to capture as well as occupy several American coastal cities. This is while rebels remain in control of the countryside.

When the Continentals gained unexpected victory and captured a British army during the Battle of Saragota in the year 1777, it convinced France to enter the picture and join the war in 1778. With France joining the war, they brought the military strength of the revolutionaries into balance with that of Britain.

As the French continue in battle, their allies - the Dutch Republic and Spain also joined the war with Britain which lasted for 2 years. They threatened invasions and they tested British military strength using campaigns in Europe. They also attacked Gibraltar and Minorca. They also escalated the global naval war.

As Spain joined the war, their involvement culminated the expulsion of British armies coming from West Florida. They secured the southern flank of American colonies.

It is through these small victories that has proven how decisive the involvement of the French empire can be. The French naval victory in Chesapeake even led to the surrender of a second British army. This is what we can recall as the Siege of Yorktown in the year 1781.

Thus, the American Revolutionary war ended in the year 1783 with the Treaty of Paris. This treaty recognized the sovereignty of the US over territories bounded by that of Canada to the north, Mississippi River to the west and Florida to the south.
