The house was used over time as a place for the Abbot to stay when not in his own mother church of St. Mary's in York. Over several decades of changed ownership, the house fell into disrepair until it was rescued, restored and reincarnated as an art gallery by the Lake District Art Gallery Trust. It boasts a fine collection including works by John Ruskin, George Romney, 18th and 19th century watercolors, and contemporary British art.
