Train Your Dog To Be Less Possessive
You cant indulge your dog to do what he likes. When your dog has a little symptom of possessiveness and you turn blind to it, it will become a big problem. Naturally, dogs sound aggressive some times when they are playing with toys. This is normal as long as the dog is just playing and will allow you to take the toy and end the game at any time.
It is important to train your dog follow your order to do anything. You can leave something like dog food or toys and forbid him or her to get unless you give the order. If the dog tries to take the object too early, correct him instantly and put him in a sit or down position. Stand over the object the way another dog would.
One thing to keep in mind is that dont make your dog upset about it. You should know that this training that forces him to wait for your order is good for him. If he seems stressed out about this process, then give him treats while he waits for the original object. Remember to tell him how good he is. Then, give a command such as OK to take the original object.
I know that a few people just take away dogs food or toys to train them. It is obviously an out date and useless way to training your dog to be less possessive. This is like a time out and teaches the dog nothing. If the dog is possessive about rawhides, youre going to have to present rawhides to him every day and correct him the second he becomes possessive.
Prepare a dog collar for your dog to provide you with better control. You should put the bone before dog and prevent him from approaching when he intends to get it. The dog must learn to stay until you allow him to get the bone. Repeat this multiple times a day before a behavior becomes conditioned, so be patient.
When the dog is able to get the bone until you give order successfully, you can reward him great treats. You need to make this training more interesting for your dog and he will learn it faster.
If your dog can wait for your order to get something successfully, I should say congratulations to you. But it is not the end. You also need to train your dog to know that you can take away anything that he gets anytime. At the beginning, you need to allow him to get the bone. Make sure to do so once you have claimed it and given him permission to take it. Once he has it in his mouth, take it away again but give it back as a reward. Practice this over and over every day.
There is special case you should notice. If your dog is a very aggressive dog, youd better look for assistance from experienced pet trainer. When you find the dog growls at you once he possesses an object, you should take the object away. If you dont do this, he will growl at you more in the future. There is a solution you may have a try. Find a better thing than the dog has and exchange it with him. By doing this, you can divert his mind to other thing. Repeat this several times until the dog becomes less aggressive.
