This means that the engine has two cylinders and that there is a 45 degree angle between these cylinders. You will find consequently two pistons, each with their own connecting rod. Each connecting rod is then connected to the crankshaft having a single pin. Inside a regular two cylinder engine the crankshaft normally has two separate pins for those individual connecting rods. With individual pins, the pistons would normally fire alternatively on every revolution of the crankshaft. This produces a level tempo according to the sound. With a Harley, the one pin causes the pistons to fireplace at uneven intervals. Once the 1st piston fires, the crankshaft rotates another 315 degrees before the next piston fires. The crankshaft then needs to rotate another 405 degrees before the first piston fires again. This is what effectively causes the initial sound of the Harley Davidson.
