The Edinburgh Festival - Embrace Our Explosion of Art and Culture

The Edinburgh Festival - Embrace Our Explosion of Art and Culture

This year the Edinburgh Festival kicked off on Friday the 13th of August (scared

?) when bands struck their first chord, singers hit that first note and dancers broke a leg (hopefully not). It was all over on Sunday the 5th of September when the fat highlander sung and fireworks lit up the night sky.

Now tell me...what is the Edinburgh Festival? Well, nowadays the Festival actually encompasses a number of different festivals which are collectively referred to as the Edinburgh Festival.

If we want to get technical, the Edinburgh Festival refers to the original festival which started in 1947 with the aim of providing 'a platform for the flowering of the human spirit' following the conclusion of World War Two.

International and local artists and companies in the fields of music, opera, dance, theatre and visual art are invited to perform at some of the largest and most prominent venues in Edinburgh such as the Edinburgh Playhouse, Festival Theatre and Usher Hall. The Edinburgh Festival - Embrace Our Explosion of Art and Culture

Of paramount importance is the internationally high standard of the performances. As a result, every single act is selected by the festival organisers and invited to perform.

So far, so good? Ok, here's where it gets a tad tricky. Like a party that everyone wants to attend, whether invited or not, hundreds if not thousands of performers descend on Edinburgh every August.

In that August of 1947, on hearing that artists could appear by invitation only, a plethora of plucky performers turned up and started a side-show of sorts on the streets of Edinburgh.

And so the Fringe Festival was born. This, in my opinion, is the truly special aspect of the Edinburgh Festival.

This is not an elitist festival for the super-talented, the rich and the famous. This is a festival for anyone, from anywhere, with an unwavering focus on free expression and pure entertainment.

While you can book tickets for shows of undeniable quality operating under the official banner of the 'Edinburgh Festival', you can also enjoy hundreds of other acts of varying degrees of bizarreness on the streets and in the smaller venues of Edinburgh as part of the 'Fringe Festival'.

Not only do we have these two festivals operating at roughly the same time, we also have the Edinburgh Comedy Festival, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and many small independent festivals clamouring for your attention.

So, as a casual onlooker, the colour, crowds, buzz and brilliance dancing before your eyes appear to stem from one crazy carnival. Make no doubt about it, the Edinburgh Festival is a treat for the senses which is not to be missed.

Describing how it feels to be in the city centre of Edinburgh during the festival requires the use of a big, fat thesaurus.

When I said the world comes to Edinburgh in August, I wasn't joking. Walking along Princes Street you will hear an incredible number of different languages. Such is the cosmopolitan atmosphere in the city, the locals are very much used to sharing their city with the world and welcoming visitors with open arms. The Edinburgh Festival - Embrace Our Explosion of Art and Culture

A walk down the High Street will take at least twice as long as it normally would as you find yourself caught up in the energy of the street performances and swept along by crowds of captivated admirers.

You will find yourself drawn to countless venues on your walk to enjoy a very reasonably priced, if not free, show involving talented and often famous performers from all over the globe.
