Texas Insurance After A Dui - What You Need To Know

If you made the mistake of driving while intoxicated

, the aftermath of a DUI can be devastating. You may not know where to turn, what type of legal issues that you will have to deal with, and how it will affect your car insurance over the long run.

High Risk Drivers

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, driving under the influence, resulting in a DUI, will affect your car insurance premium. If a driving record shows a DUI conviction, an auto insurance provider will have to review your driving history. In this instance, you may be considered what is called a "high risk driver"; a DUI conviction will affect how much an insurance company will charge for your premium within a higher risk category.

With that being said, the repercussions of a DUI will vary by state. In the state of Texas, how a DUI affects your car insurance policy will differ dramatically from a number of other states.

Texas DUI Driving Regulations

In the state of Texas, a DUI offense will stay on your driving record indefinitely. This is compared to a number of other states that will keep a DUI on an individual driving record for up to 10 years, where it will then be removed. As a result, a permanent DUI offense on a driving record will have long-lasting repercussions on the cost of a monthly car insurance premium.

A first DUI, or DWI, offense in Texas will be classified as a misdemeanor. This could result in a fine of up to $2000 with potential jail time from 72 hours to six months. For most first offense cases, you will be granted probation that will last for up to two years. Within this time, a number of other requirements must be met, including alcohol education, drug or alcohol evaluation, and participation in a victim impact panel.

After all of these legal issues have been dealt with, you will be required to have Texas SR 22 auto insurance for a minimum of two years after a DWI. Depending upon the insurance provider that you choose, this type of specialty insurance after an alcohol-related conviction can be quite expensive. In fact, some auto insurance companies may refuse SR 22 insurance altogether.

Texas DWI Insurance Requirements

In the state of Texas, DWI drivers are required to maintain liability coverage on a Texas car insurance policy at a bare minimum. They must also submit proof of this insurance to the Texas DPS.

This minimal liability requirement is 30/60/25, meaning $30,000 per person limit, $60,000 for all persons, and $25,000 for property damage. Although these requirements may seem stringent, other states have increased the DUI penalty to as much as 100/300/50 in Florida for high risk drivers.

If you've made the unfortunate mistake of getting a DUI in Texas, all hope isn't lost. While there are a number of laws and regulations that will affect your insurance premium, shopping around with different insurance providers will give you the opportunity to get price quotes to find post-DUI car insurance that remains affordable.
