summer assignment

This summer assignment will be discussing inferences that I made through out the book also

, what was cooking and housekeeping like? What sort of chores would young people have been assigned? What were worship, communication, dating, transportation, and government was like?

In the 1700's doctors didn't have a lot of medicine for the people, so the people got sick by getting a fever or a disease, or even a flu. Since doctors had low supply on medicine people died such as in Night Journey's by Avi Peter York's family died from a very sever fever (Pg.3).

In the 1700's most French fought the English. In the book The Ransom of Mercy Carter by Caroline B. Cooney the French and the Indians got along well back then so the Indians went to capture the English and held a ransom. Ransom is the practice of holding a prisoner or item to extort money or property to secure their release, or it can refer to the sum of money involved. The French started this because one of French general from French military blew up English ships and was sent to jail. This made the Frech vere upset so they captured the English and held a ransomso they could try and get their general back .

While reading Night Journey's by Avi I realized that when a crime or something bad happened award was given to who ever took the felon into justice (Pg.11). The award was up to ten pounds. This made a lot of people go searching for the felon's. In the book Night Journey's by Avi large search parties would go out searching at night and day. They tried to go any possible moment they could. When people heard how high the award was people went crazy because the money was too high to give up. Back then the money was called pounds.summer assignment

During the 1700's there was a lot of work to do or chores that the kids had to do like, such as in the book Night Journey's by Avi when the English was kidnapped and held for ransom they had to hunt for food on their way to the destination which was in Kahnawake, Canada. The English boys and Indian men went to go hunting for deer and other wild life animals (Pg.103)

During the 1700's the Indians and the French both worked with the English by trading with them. The Indians traded their spices, herbs and tools. Some of the things that the French traded were their guns and rifles. The French also traded by teaching them some of their religion. The French were catholic so the French taught the English Catholicism. In the book Night Journeys by Avi the English traveled from their little town Deerfield, Massachusetts and traveled all the way to Kahnawake, Canada. (pg.114)

During the 1700's the transportation was mostly by boat back then. In the book the Night journey's by Avi there were horses, and steam boats and a ferry. When peter York tried to help one of the felons to escape from the Pennsylvania side to the New Jersey Side. He told her to take the ferry because it would be faster to take it rather then to take a steam boat but, she agreed to neither and they both wound up swimming in it all the way from the jersey shore to the Delaware River. (pg.48) the men used the horses to try and find felons who had escaped or ran away. In the book The Ransom of Mercy Carter they also had ferries and steam boats which was their way of transportation, when the English were captured by the Indians they had to walk from Deerfield Massachusetts all the way to Kahnawake, Canada. It took months to get there. It was a 300 mile walk; many people were hungry and tired during this event.

The Indians had their own language; they would give each other name's which meant things, like for example Ruth (one of the characters) had two names. One was Mahakemo which meant (Fire eats her) then later on in the book she gets a new name which was Spukumenen which meant (Let the Sky In). Most of the characters had Indian names. Mercy had Munnock which meant alone star. Mercy had got the name alone star because she was very brave and took great care of Daniel on the way to kahnawake, Canada. Every Indian had a name to. Like for an example mercy's, Indian's name was Tannhahorens. The Indians mostly communicated in their Indian language; rarely did they speak in English. Mercy knew more of the Indian language then her Indian did English. In The book Night Journey's by Avi they communicated all the same they all spoke English. Only a few words were different like (aye, thee).

In the book Night Journey's by Avi the woman did most of the chores like make the food and wash the dishes clean the house wash the clothes. In this case Peter York's adopted mom did all this. Peter York's adopted moms name was Mister Shinn and His adopted dads name was Mr. Shinn. In the book The Ransom of Mercy Carter Mercy's nistenha did all the chores. (Nistenha meant mom) Mercy's nistenha did all the dishes and made baskets cleaned the clothes made the food

During the 1700's the English used as much protection as possible to protect them from anyone that were dangerous. The English used barriers to defend themselves. In the book The Ransom of Mercy Carter Mercy's Town Deerfield, Massachusetts built a stockade which was made out of stone instead of brick, it was also overlapped with a tall metal gate (Pg.7).summer assignment

During the 1700's men and women and children were brought from both England and Europe under a contract to give their labor to English puritans. The poor people didn't get paid at all. These people had names which were bondsmen. They were very poor. In the book Night Journey's by Avi Everett Shinn found out that two bondsmen had escaped their owner (Pg.10)

Both of these books have are historical books that are written by authors. The authors describe and write what it was like living back then by changing the names and using the same story and adding some of her own thoughts. In both books Night Journeys by Avi And the Ransom of Mercy Carter by Caroline B. Clooney both describes what it was like for the English settlers. Both stories both took place in 1700's (New England). It wasn't called America until later on in life.
