Solar Powered Boats

The last three decades of the 20th century saw an ever increasing interest for solar powered boats, which started with the energy crisis of the 1970s. The first solar boat was built around the middle of that decade in England. Since then several countries have developed their own model of solar powered boat. Today, the vast majority of boats still run on fuel and sail power, but there is already a considerable number of solar powered boats around the world, used for diverse purposes.

With many people looking for alternative ways to charge their boat, the solution of mounting a solar power system on the boat has become a common option. This solar power system can either provide power directly, or charge the batteries so that the power accumulated can be used later. There are different models of these solar systems, which are small and designed to be easily installed.

Today solar powered boats are used mostly for recreational purposes and they are usually found operating in freshwater inland bodies of water such as canals, rivers and lakes, due to their still limited range and performance. The fact that they are quiet, don't pollute the air, and don't scare away the wildlife make them the perfect vehicle for enjoying the wonders and magic of traveling through natural surroundings with the minimum of disruption.

Despite being still quite expensive, solar powered boats are becoming more affordable and following demand there is also a growing supply of boats with features very similar to travel trailers, including all the gadgets we seem not to be able to live without and add to the comfort of the journey.

Outside the recreational domain, the 1990s saw the appearance of the first commercial solar passenger boats, some of which have been successfully used at sea. These solar passenger boats continue to be developed and are becoming more and more reliable, which allows us to say that solar powered boats are a reality to stay.
