Ski holidays can seem a little expensive, especially for those of us who have never tried it before. So, what would get us on the slopes for the first time? A ski holiday for less than 500 could be just the answer, especially if you take a fair amount of the budget - then you'll have plenty of cash for those nights of apres-ski.
Arinsal, Andorra
Andorra is well known among skiers for offering great value for money. It used to be the place to go for decent skiing conditions and a tax-free shopping trip. Now, after major investment over the last few years, the benefits while on the slopes have gradually caught up with the benefits when off them.
If you ski in Arinsal, you'll be able to enjoy a lively atmosphere after a fantastic day on the slopes for all abilities. It's unlikely, but you might get bored of skiing. Well, there's skidooing, snowshoeing, toboganning and good old-fashioned walking for when you fancy a change. With prices regularly below 500 and often less than 200 for a week in the late season, you'll be on the slopes with money still in your pockets - so be careful when you take a tumble.

One of the very best in Europe, if not the world, Les Deux Alpes is a skier's paradise. Whether you're a pro or a beginner, on your own or in a group, this ski resort offers everything you need. A good apres-ski scene, off-piste activities and picturesque scenery, it's also not too far from home if you're not a fan of flying. You can jump aboard a train and get there in a short time.
Ski there in January for around 300 and you can use the money left from your 500 to go ice-skating or a visit to the ice caves. France ski resorts have a reputation for being slightly more expensive when it comes to food and drink, so for those on a budget - self-catering is the best option.
Crans Montana, Switzerland
If you're going to Crans Montana, you've got to stay in a self-catering chalet. Not served by as many ski companies as it should be, you will probably need to build your holiday yourself. You should be able to get flights, transfer and chalet for less than 500, depending on the time you go, and you'll have a fantastic ski holiday that's different from the rest.
