QuickBooks Online Plus How to Leverage "Job Costing"

Thisproposed "Job Costing" solution for QuickBooks Online Plus was based on a recommedation posted to Intuit's Online Plus "Answers" forum, suggesting to use the "Bill with Parent" option within the Customer form. This solution was developed in response to the following question that was posted to QuickBooks Online Plus Answers Forum: "Does Online Plus offer job costing?"

NOTE: The Job Costing solution below is based on Intuit's Online Plus "Answers" forum which recommended using "Bill with Parent" option for question: "Does Online Plus offer job costing?

1)First, I created 3 customer sub-accounts using "Bill with Parent" option on the Customer Information form to leverage "Job Costing" capabilities within QB Online Plus. This provides business owners using QuickBooks Online Plus with the flexibility to track costs at the job level for customers that have multiple projects.

Step #1: Click on CUSTOMER tab to access Customer Center

Step #2: Click on "New Customer" button and insert customer sub-account name to track by job. Append "Job #1" to customer name ("Amy's Bird Sanctuary-Job #1")

Step #3: Sselect "Is Sub-customer?" checkbox in lower right-hand section of form

Step #4: Make sure "Bill with Parent" radio button is chosen

Step #5: Click "Save" and you're done.

The new customer sub-account(s) will appear in Customer Center under the parent customer and you will be able to track jobs using both customer parent and sub-account levels. I also created & assigned both expense and invoice items to one of the new customer sub-accounts I created to ensure all costs would roll up properly into the Customer Center section. All sub-account job related costs rolled up and appeared accurately within the Customer Center section.

2)The next step was to make sure the customer sub-account data (for tracking costs at the job level) could be rolled up into a Profit and Loss (P&L) report. This required to make customizations to the P&L report with the job costing attributes identified in the steps below.

Step #1: Under REPORTS tab, click on PROFIT & LOSS report.

Step #2: After clicking "Customize " button, make the following 2 changes:

-Under Rows/Columns section in Customize Profit & Loss dialog box, change Columns drop-down list value from "Total Only" to "Customers".

-Scroll down to Lists section in Customize Profit & Loss dialog box, select the Customer sub-account (Amy's Bird Sanct-Job #1) that you created above using "Bill with Parent" option. This will update the P&L report to track at job level.

After my customizations to the P&L report were made, the P&L presented all the customer costs properly, both at the parent-level and sub-account customer level. My next step is to test Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Porjection reports, to make sure they can also produce reporting detail at the job / project level.
