Personal Space

Ever sat at your desk daydreaming of your first apartment

? Do you flip through house and home magazines looking for inspiration for your room? Most people, but young people especially, have a space that they live in, they decorate it and that's kind of it. They don't move often, they don't have large decorating budgets, and in some cases, don't have much space to do things with anyway.

When limited to a room in say, a house share, the only real decorating opportunities one has is in their bedroom. Depending on how much time and money you want to spend on a room that you don't own, and how much your landlord will let you do, here are a few possibilities:

1. Tearing out the carpets and putting down hardwood:

Hardwood floors add a lot of charm and character to a room. A nice, tan wood looks great juxtaposed to plain white or cream coloured walls. If you then add hints of colour with a cool bedspread, funky curtains or a bright bookshelf you can create the perfect balance of country appeal with youthfulness.

2. Artwork:

If you're on a limited budget you won't be hanging Picasso's on your bedroom wall. Moreover, that size and style of artwork generally isn't well suited a small bedroom. Prints, friends art and quote art work really well in these spaces. Quotes give a good feel of who you are, which will be evident anyway from your other decorating decisions. Pictures of friends work well, but maybe just choose one or two and make it a bit of a focal art piece instead of an immature looking collage.

3. Mirrors, jewellery and scarves:

If you have limited space it will be near impossible for you to fit everything that you own into some sort of storage. That means that some of your items will be on display. Choose those items carefully and organise them in a way that adds to the dcor of your room. Colourful scarves can hang over your bookshelf, candles can decorate your bureau or mantelpiece, and jewellery can explode out of its boxes. These little personal touches may feel messy but they aren't, they're little bursts of you all over your space.

The truth is how we choose decorate depends more on the space than our style. Most of us identify with a few styles so if we find ourselves in an old home we're happy to give it a French Country feel or if we find ourselves in a loft with exposed brick and piping, we can bring out our funky furniture and make it a bit Brooklyn.
