Model Trains Are Not Just Simply Toys

Models trains are like real trains, but they are in a much smaller size

. For this reason they are not considered to be simply toys. They are really collectibles, collectibles that are exact replicas of the real thing.

So a model train is a scaled down equivalent of a real train. Again, the reason is the exact look-alike nature of a model train - that is, it looks exactly like the real thing. And there are standards applied in their manufacture.

Since the HO scale is the most frequently used scale, it stands to reason that this particular scale has the largest numbers of accessories to go with a setup.

N scale train designs are second in popularity. Their popularity rests, in part, on the fact that more complex configurations are available, but the whole setup uses less space. Since hobbyists are usually not interested in sacrificing details just to save space, the N scale is rather popular with them.

The smallest possible scale available in model trains or railroading is the Z scale. This particular scale tends to be popular with people who reside in apartment where the space available for a layout is really limited. A complex train design setup on this scale can fit into a small space yet will still allow features like landscapes and buildings along the tracks. The power supply for this scale is also enough to operate the set.

Over in England the OO scale tends to be the most popular. This scale is manufactured by Homby and this company makes quite a few sets using the OO scale.

Then there is the O scale, and this scale happens to be the largest in the entire world. A German manufacturer, Maklin, is responsible for developing it in the 1900s. The reason for the popularity of this large scale is owing to the fact that it was compatible in size with doll houses. In this scale 1/4" is the equivalent of 1 foot.

It was because of the general popularity of model railroading that the O scale was sized down to what is today the HO scale - which is half the size of the original O scale.

In this day and age the HO scale is the scale that seems to offer the greatest variety of engines and cars and the accessories that go with setting up a great layout. The price of a good engine can itself run into the hundreds of dollars. Since an investment in train designs can be considerable, the enthusiasm of the hobbyist must be checked by or matched with their budget.

It is conceivable to spend as much as $100,000 for a large and complex setup of an entire railroading model. And building up to a large setup may take years. So anyone can see that this kind of setup can really make one take notice and then some. A setup like this is a joy to see, with towns and mountains and waterfalls and tunnels alongside or through which the model trains can ride.
