Barbados is a colourful island paradise that features some of the Caribbean's finest hotels

, resorts and beaches. It is one of the most developed islands in the region and benefits from rugged coastlines, pristine sands and warm, turquoise seas.

More than 500,000 visitors fly into Barbados' Grantley Adams International Airport each year. Just eight miles east of the airport is the country's capital Bridgetown. This bustling city is the only one on the island and is the commercial hub on Barbados. At its centre lies Broad Street, this runs past the main shopping areas and parliament buildings and is a good starting place for your sightseeing and shopping activities. The city is filled with historically important building and many bars, restaurants and shops. Each year many events are held in Bridgetown, including Barbados' famous jazz festival which takes place every January.

Bridgetown is situated on the south western coast of Barbados and is connected to the south coast by a long stretch of hotels and resorts. The south coast is Barbados' tourist centre and benefits from calmer seas than some of the island's other shores. The beaches benefit from small to medium waves, so this part of the coast is very popular with divers and kite surfers.

Moving on to the east coast of Barbados and you find yourself in surfer's paradise. Huge Atlantic wave crash on the shores and the beaches are probably better for topping up the tan and walking, unless you are there to catch a wave or two. There are some very picturesque landscapes on the east coast and is a place of beautiful windswept vistas and a more relaxed atmosphere. The east coast is less populated than many areas of the island and can be a nice place to escape the crowds in the high tourist seasons. Luxury Barbados holidays

The northern coast of Barbados is even more rocky and rough round the edges, but is full of remote coastal areas and spectacular weathered cliffs. Swimming is safe in some the more sheltered rocky coves, but the seas can get quite rough. The north of the island is often where locals will go to relax and escape the crowds and is a perfect place to find hidden beaches where it feels you have the whole place to yourselves.

Finally, on to the west coast where you'll find most of the most of the island's exclusive properties, which are perfect for luxury Barbados holidays. The sea of the west coast is clear and calm and is the best place for swimming and snorkelling. This part of the island is often called the platinum coast and is a must visit part of the island if you can afford it!
