How to Replace Your Auto Glass

How to Replace Your Auto Glass

There's a stigma associated with replacing your own windshield

. Yes, auto glass service professionals make it look easy, but so would you if you did it twenty times a day. There's really no big secret here and it doesn't even require a lot of tools. All you need is a razor, some tape, a windshield removing tool, auto adhesive and some time and patience to save some big bucks on replacing your own windshield.

First, you need to figure out which type of glass you need to buy or order. Take into consideration what make and model your car is and what kind of glass was in it originally. There are two different kinds of glass that the auto industry uses, tempered and laminated. They don't use plain glass because it shatters everywhere in the event of an accident. Tempered glass is usually used in side windows and has been heated so that it easily shatters for a quick escape. Laminated glass is just that, laminated glass. The glass on most windshields has been coated with a thin film to make sure that, in the event that it shatters, it stays relatively intact and doesn't shower the driver and passengers with pieces.

Once you've gotten the correct size and type of glass for your vehicle, we can set about replacing it.

Remove the trim of your windshield with the windshield remover tool. Heat the adhesive (a blow dryer works) and cut it around all sides with the razor. This will enable you to remove the windshield. How to Replace Your Auto Glass

After the old windshield is gone, cut the old adhesive evenly around the sides. Leave a thin strip for the new adhesive to adhere to. If you hit metal don't worry. Just apply some welding primer to the exposed metal area. That should be enough to place the adhesive in place without it being attached to bare metal.

Use tape to fit the new windshield into place. Apply the tape to both the windshield and the body of the care in perpendicular strips to hold it in place while you make adjustments. Cut the tape with your razor after you've gotten it snug. Good, now remove the windshield and leave the tape in place.

Apply a thin bead of adhesive around the windshield frame. Make sure that it is applied evenly all the way around.

Install your windshield by aligning the tape markings. If it's not exact, slide the windshield into its proper position. Never pick up your windshield to adjust it. This will form air bubbles that are difficult to remove.

Hold the windshield in place with tape for roughly 24 hours to make sure the adhesive dries properly. Different adhesives have different drying times, so if you're not sure, consult the directions on the bottle.

If at any point in the replacement of your auto glass you feel unsure, consult a professional. Even if you know you could do it if you knew what kind of glass to get, just ask. Auto glass repair services will be happy to help you whenever you need them. But there you go. You conquered the one thing most people won't fool with on their cars! Sure they'll play with their engines all day, but a real repairman has the gentle touch needed to perform auto glass repair!
