Not surprisingly, data from 2003 shows that about half of the money sent to Colombia was transferred from the United States. In general, the number of remittances steadily increased from 1998 to 2008, with every year having many more transfers than the previous year. For example, 2006 had about 17 percent more remittances than 2005. This trend is mainly because more Colombians than ever were finding jobs overseas. Most of them were in the United...more
Remittances in general have slowed down in most countries as a result of the economy, but Latin America has not appeared to be hit as hard as many nations. In fact, 2007 saw an increase in money transfers of nearly 8 percent in El Salvador. From 1998 to 2008, the number of money transfers tripled. 2008's number of remittances was equal to about 17 percent of the area's gross domestic product, or GDP, showing that the country heavily relies on...more
The flow of remittance to Pakistan has certainly had its ups and downs in the past several years. The early 1980s experienced a peak of remittances, as the number was at about $3 billion per year at that time. Though it decreased to about $2 billion per year or less during the 1990s, the year 2002 saw a marked increase in remittances. That year, about 3.5 billion was sent to Pakistan, and it steadily increased over the years until it hit a record-breaking $5.5 billion in 2006.Clearly, this trend of increases of people able to send money to Pakistan has not let up. 2007 experienced nearly $6.5 billion of remittances, and 2008 followed suit with $7.8 billion. Due to these changes, remittances are now being watched more closely than ever by a few companies that are curious as to the reason for the increase. More people than before are also now transferring money out of Pakistan to other countries, though the most recorded was about $10 million in 2004.Methods for sending money to Pakistan include banks, money transfer services, and the use of a prepaid debit card. Most people in the United States have access to such programs, though most other countries also offer these methods....more

In 2007 alone, nearly $3 million was sent to this country, which is the most in at least a decade. Of course, those figures have climbed since that year. Over 1.5 million people from this area live in another country, which clearly creates a need to easily transfer money back home to assist relatives. Many leave the nation to find work elsewhere, often in the United States, but do not forget about their family while they are away.Despite the fact that the United States also suffers from loss of jobs, it appears that the Dominican Republic is worse off considering that many come here to find work. Remittances to the area make up about ten percent of the country's GDP, which can clearly reduce the general poverty level of the area. In fact, about 60 percent of the remittances tend to go toward families who are lower class. In many cases, the ability for overseas family members to send money to Dominican Republic allows families to survive financially. Not surprisingly, Mexico receives the highest number of remittances in Latin America. This is evident just by the amount of services in the United States that allow customers to send money there absolutely free. The countries with the...more
