Disability Insurance for Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a dangerous sleep condition that can be fatal. It is characterized by the abnormal cessation of breathing during sleep. There are two types of sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most commonly found form of this sleep condition and occurs when muscles at the base of throat relax and block the airway during sleeping. Central sleep apnea arises when the brain fails to send messages to the muscles that control breathing. Certain people may have the combination of both these forms of sleep apneas, known as complex sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea does have many notable symptoms, including loud snoring during sleeping, hypersomnia or excessive daytime sleepiness, sudden awakenings from sleep and the associated shortness of breath, insomnia or difficulty to stay asleep, headaches during morning, episodes of breathing pauses during sleep, and waking up from sleep with sore throat or dry mouth. This sleep condition is most commonly found in people with obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, persistent nasal congestion, narrowed airway, and with a family history of sleep apnea. The use of alcohol and tranquilizers and smoking can increase the risk of obstructive sleep apnea.

Central sleep apnea has similar symptoms like obstructive sleep apnea. It can be caused by many factors, including high altitude, congestive heart failure, stroke, brain damage, and the use of certain medications like opioids. Some people may have idiopathic central sleep apnea.

Individuals with sleep apnea should seek medical intervention if they experience excessive day drowsiness, snoring that is loud enough to wake others up, shortness of breath during sleeping, and intermittent breathing pauses during sleeping.

Sleep apnea can lead to life threatening medical conditions such as high blood pressure, atria fibrillation and other abnormal heart rhythms, cardiovascular disease, hypoxia or low blood oxygen, which can cause sudden death from heart failure. Moreover, the daytime drowsiness can cause several problems like fatigue, irritability, poor concentration, decreased mental development, behavior problems, and poor performance in school and at work.

Fortunately, sleep apnea can be treated with many different therapies, such as CPAP or continuous positive airway pressure, adjustable airway pressure devices, oral applications, and supplemental oxygen therapy. This sleep condition may also be treated with surgeries like uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, maxillomandibular advancement, and tracheostomy. Moreover, sleep apnea is considered as a disability by the Canadian Government. If you are suffering from this sleep order, you are entitled to claim for disability insurance and other benefits. Professional services like the Canadian Disability Corporation can help you get the disability insurance and other benefits you deserve. They can make the whole procedure simpler and easier for you.
