Dental Implants Or Preserving Natural Teeth

Dental implant technology is advancing at a great pace opening up new options for dental restoration

. Implant dentistry gives hope for those who have all or some missing teeth, those who find it difficult to wear dentures or have oral defects or missing mouth parts due to an injury, surgery or birth defects.

But what is the best route to take if you still have natural teeth, some of which need restoration? Do you get rid of them and opt for dental implants or trust your dentist to preserve the natural teeth? Which is better, preservation with root canal procedure or dental implant?

The answer depends upon a number of factors including the condition of gum and bone tissue, health of teeth surrounding the tooth that needs restoration and surprisingly, the age of the patient and interestingly, on the attitudes of your dentist.

According to the University of Connecticut Health Center for Implant and Reconstructive Dentistry, both research and practical experience show that implants work best when there is enough dense and healthy jawbone in the mouth to support the implant. It is also necessary to have healthy, disease-free gum tissues because in the long-term, the success of an implant depends upon maintaining healthy gums and bone around the implant. Although age is not an issue for dental implants, its best to avoid them until jaw bone and mouth structures are matured. This is why dental implants are not recommended to pre-adolescents. They are also considered unsuitable for very elderly persons, but for different reasons. Dental implants are not ideal for those with chronic diseases such as diabetes which can impede healing and for those at high risk of gum disease, including smokers.

On the other hand, if you are to opt for preserving the natural tooth, by resorting to root canals (endodontics) and with crowns and bridges, but without an implant, the condition of the tooth or teeth and location can be key factors. Surrounding teeth as well as the gum tissue have to be healthy when a bridge is to be fixed.

But that is not all. Although the American Association for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons officially state that dental implants are frequently the best treatment option for replacing missing teeth, whether your dentists will recommend implants or work on preserving your tooth also depends upon his or her attitudes to implant dentistry.

Results of a survey to find out whether general dentists support the placement of dental implants by endodontists showed that 66 percent of respondents were opposed to endodontists placing implants; and almost three quarters (73 percent) indicated that they would not refer patients to an endodontist for implant placement. The 29-item survey was sent to 1,500 randomly selected practicing general dentists within the United States; and received responses from 366 dentists.

However, despite these constraints, the demand for implant therapy continues to grow. This is why the study concluded that it may be necessary to increase the number of practitioners who place dental implants since the majority of general dentists who responded did not support implant placement by endodontists. The findings of the survey are published in the Journal of Endodontics in August 2011 under the title, Should Endodontists Place Dental Implants? A National Survey of General Dentists.

These are the many factors that you need to consider before making a decision on whether to go for implants or an alternative.
