Being Pregnant With MRSA Staph Infection

Being Pregnant With MRSA Staph Infection

For pregnant woman, carrying a child is the most important time of the mother-to-be life

. Pregnancy causes the hormonal levels to rise, and the immune system may become weak. These things are caused by stress and gestation of the fetus. The weak immune system puts the expectant mother at high risk of being infected by MRSA staph infection if exposed to it. New studies show that the number of pregnant women infected by MRSA staph infection has risen significantly in the past few years.

Statistics show from a 2004 study published in the Journal Watch General Medicine in the fall of 2005. Seventeen expectant mothers contracted MRSA and about 50% of those women were infected during there second trimester and 18% contracted the infection after delivery. Most of the pregnant women had skin infection of soft tissue infection, 60% of which received some sort of treatment during there hospital stay. Most of the expectant mothers that were infected underwent a cesarean section operation.

Of the seventeen women who obtained the MRSA staph infection, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, rifampicin, and vancomycin had the most promising results when it came to a cure. Of the infected expectant mothers ninety-eight percent were able to be cured using the drug gentamicin, then eighty-seven percent became sensitive to the drug tetracycline, then eighty-four percent were also sensitive to levofloxacin. Studies over the past decade have shown us that these antibiotics are having to be prescribed in much, much higher doses in order to combat the same types of staph infections as the MRSA staph infection super-bug continues to evolve itself.

A major problem that comes to the surface is that the antibiotic could have some major effect on the babies fetus if the antibiotic medication were ingested. The subjects in this test all had mrsa infection on the outer part of the body so there was no danger to the baby in the womb. To date there are not any known reported cases of a miscarriage that was said to be attributed to a MRSA staph infection.Being Pregnant With MRSA Staph Infection

There are all types of different antibiotics that can be used to get rid of MRSA staph infection at any stage during a pregnancy. If deemed necessary, the antibiotic penicillin or even a penicillin derivative may be prescribed by your doctor for a MRSA infected pregnant woman. These kind's of antibiotics don't appear at this stage to cause any sort of birth defects of any kind or any other problem. It could begin to get a little dangerous if the pregnant woman is allergic to penicillin or penicillin derivatives. The best advice I can give on how to manage MRSA staph infection during a pregnancy is to speak with your doctor to find a proper treatment in this important time of your and your unborn child's life.

The number one rule for avoiding MRSA staph infection while expecting a child is prevention, prevention, prevention. If there is anyone in your house that has been diagnosed with a MRSA infection, stay away from anything that they might have touched, this is too prevent being contaminated. Increase the amount of times you wash your hands seven-fold and get some antibacterial as well as some disinfectant soaps and use them all day long everyday. Good hygiene and Prevention is the only way to avoid and mange MRSA infection while expecting a child.
