Medical Publication links Femur Fracture to Fosomax:Fosomax, a bisphosphonate drug, is used to treat osteoporosis as well as other bone diseases in men and women. Over 40 million prescriptions have been written for this popular osteoporotic medication. Fosomax was designed to inhibit osteoclasts to prevent bone resorption without any effect on mineralization. In December 18, 2010, the Clinical Orthopedic Related Research Journal reported 4 cases of women who experienced low-trauma Fosomax femur fractures while on Fosomax for more than 5 years. Their X-rays showed the typical transverse fractures observed in some other Fosomax users. One patient recovered by discontinuation of the therapy but the other 3 patients required surgical intervention and rehabilitation. These unusual transverse fractures are not well understood at this time but there may be clinical relevance.
