Your Child Just Moved Out: Time To Clean And Organize

There comes a time in every parent's life when their child

, or children, leave home. Some parents decide to clean and organize the room so their child will always have a place to come home to. Others decide to turn that unused room into a gym or a crafting area. Some choose to do as Ron Witwicky, played by Kevin Dunn with Shia LaBeouf as his college bound son, Sam on Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, "something that rhymes with home theater." Whatever you decide to do with your child's old room, you probably need some tips as to where to start.

Organization is Key

Organizing a room that's just been vacated by a teenager may sound like a complete fairy tale. No worries, it really isn't that difficult. You'll need several boxes. Mark them explicitly. You'll need a box for each of the following categories: trash, donation, sell, and store.

Decide what you're going to do with your child's old things as you discover them tucked away in corners, on shelves, under the bed and in the closet. Old toys they've not touched in years should probably be donated to underprivileged children or to a charity of some sort. Many daycares and preschools enjoy receiving donations of old toys or clothing.

If your teen is like many others these days, they probably have a huge collection of video games that they hadn't touched in years. Most old video games sell very well to game stores that buy and sell, either on consignment or just straight out. You may be surprised at the amount of money you could get by selling older or rare games.

Next, tackle the shelves that are probably packed with books and random whatnots your child collected throughout the years. Sports trophies or academic rewards should be kept and displayed or packed away for safekeeping as you see fit. Posters and other wall hangings are probably pretty special to your now-independent young adult; pack those away carefully as well.

Your next chore will likely be the closet. That spot where your child has thrown everything since they were very young. You'll likely find things in the closet that will make you laugh, cry and simply wonder what it is and how it got there. Old clothing should probably be donated; your child likely took everything they needed.

Spaces under the bed are usually packed with random things your child has tossed underneath throughout their lives. You may find things from very early childhood stuffed under the bed if your family has lived in the same house for several years.

Some of the things your teen has collected over time are probably things they'd like to keep. Ask them ahead of time to put their precious mementos into a box and put them in the attic so you can make use of their old room in their absence. Make sure to be open and honest, letting your child know they can still come home any time they want, but you trust that they're adult enough to live on their own. They should understand that they can have their old room back should they return.

Organizing a room is the first step to a relaxed atmosphere. Planning and organization will make your job much easier. You may choose to paint the walls or redo the floors in your new room. Have fun with whatever you choose to do. You've raised a responsible young adult who's out on his or her own; that earns you a pat on the back as well as a special space to call your own.
