Whilst traditional and still practiced in some parts of the world, the concept of co-sleeping has started debate for years between specialists and also continues to divide parents. It is well known that children settle better in close proximity to their parents/guardians but where the conflict lies is health professionals' concerns that co-sleeping hinders small children from being independent and increasing their self confidence. They state that kids who co-sleep will grow up to become over-protected and a lot less independent compared to children that will have slept independently from a young age.

Equally as important is the simple fact that children won't be the only people altered by co-sleeping; sharing a bed with their youngsters is also surely going to take it's toll on parents' relationships. You don't have to be a mum or a dad to be capable of comprehending the importance of some quiet time after they've gone to bed; whether it's one hour or a few hours, it is an opportunity for parents to spend some time on their own relationship.

One of the keys to a stable, sound relationship is making time for one another. Getting close to and being affectionate with a spouse is an important reflection of emotional closeness but once children are sharing the same bed, this is certainly jeopardised. Throw into the mix the sheer impracticality of getting three, possibly even four people in a bed intended for just 2 and it doesn't require a genius to work out that at least one co-sleeper will be confronted with nights of interrupted sleep. It's legendary that fatigue will induce irritability and like a ticking bomb, it won't be very long before exhausted mums and dads start to squabble and bicker through frustration and exhaustion. Very often parents come to differ about co-sleeping which can cause added hostility between them.

Unsurprisingly, children want to be nearby to their mums and dads; indeed when we grow older we still are comforted by our parents. It is human nature that a parental job is to protect and a child's to be protected but once it gets to the moment where by a relationship begins to suffer then surely that could be significantly more unsettling for a child than sleeping in their own bed?

If it turns out a young child can evolve as far as self-esteem and independence while co-sleeping and partners can make sure that they are able to maintain a sufficient bond within their relationship then surely there is no issue. Finding a middle ground between a child's need for comfort and their development as well as parents' need for personal privacy and peace is really the most important part.
