Why Family Emergency Preparedness is So Important
Why Family Emergency Preparedness is So Important
Family emergency preparedness is extremely important for a number of reasons. In case of fires, theft, and other emergencies, families should always be aware of how to best deal with any situation that might be presented. When a plan and supplies are not in tact, there is a lot of room for error and tragedy.
In fact, many people lose loved ones, pets, and cherished possessions when they are not prepared for disasters that could happen at any time. Being prepared for any situation is the most effective way to play it safe. You don't need a plan for every situation that could happen, you just need a plan that can address almost any problem that might arise.
Have a Family Preparedness Map
One of the most important things you can do for your family is to create a map of your home with some escape routes drawn out. Come up with at least two different ways to get out of the house in case of fire, burglars, or other disasters like earthquakes. Draw the escape routes on the map and make sure the entire family knows which route is to be tried first, and which should be considered the back up escape plan.
Put Together a Family Preparedness Kit
An important part of family emergency preparedness means to make sure there is plenty of food and water for everyone in the home, for at least a week. Find a safe place to store a few gallons of drinking water, some matches, some canned food, a can opener, and some seeds you can sprout for extra food. Make sure everyone knows where the kit is in case they have to be the ones to get it when it's needed. The kit should also include a first aid kit, scissors, a sewing kit, some extra material, and some coats and blankets. Waterproof tarps and tents might also come in handy.
Clue in Extended Family
Give parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins that might live near you a copy of your plans in case they can't get a hold of you in an emergency. This will help them to locate you if something happens that will require them to aid you or require them to get aid from you. Giving them a key to your home for occasions when you are out of town or in trouble is always a good idea too.
Practice Makes Perfect
It is extremely important to practice your family emergency preparedness plans. Everyone should practice the home's escape routes until they can do it in their sleep. The entire family should participate in disaster drills at least three times a year so that everyone is prepared to come together and get through whatever might come your way.
