In order to find work and earn enough money to survive you need a degree to get a job and stay in your job. Society does not recognize you as a respectful person unless you have a degree of some sort in your hand. Degrees and diplomas are your card for self-esteem and self actualization, facing yourself and facing others. You have respect of others should have a paper saying you are educated in certain branch of knowledge or another.
People have no respect for someone who has no degree. Books of religion advances the idea that in order to be qualified for entrance into paradise and avoiding hell fire you need to believe in God and perform good deeds. Likewise, in order to qualify for entrance into hell fire you need the degree of disbelief in God, representing the ultimate evil and sinful deed, since you will be denying the truth, then whatever you do is evil.
