?Over the past few weeks at various events I have been asked the question "What are the benefits of using a professional web designer rather than simply using an online site builder?". I am alway a little surprised at this but I shouldn't be, it is a fair question as many people are simply not aware of the benefits that having a website properly designed and built can bring. This article aims to address this and to point (hopefully in plain English) out a few of the creative and technical reasons why it is often appropriate to hire a professional to design or re-design your website.
It Is More Than Just The Website
A good web designer will have a creative skillset that extends beyond simply laying out the various elements of your website's pages. Your corporate identity (including logo, colours, typefaces) is crucial to how your company is perceived and remembered by potential clients. A designer can work with you to get this right from the start and these guidelines can be used across all the media you will need including business cards, letterheads and ultimately your website. The website will then be a true online representation of your company, not an approximation using the closest off-the-shelf-template'. This ensures your company's message is clear and appropriate and represents you when you are not there personally to sell your wares. This branding now often extends way beyond the website with social media backgrounds and icons needing to be created to tie in with the company branding, all of which can be handled by the designer, saving your time and ensuring your company is promoting a clear and cohesive message to it's customers.
Technical Issues
As well as designing the website a good designer will ensure that it isbuilt properly. A good site is one with well written code behind it. There are two very important reasons for getting this right. A properly coded site will ensure that the site can be accessed by the visually impaired who rely on screen readers to read' the sight aloud to them. Secondly, Google (and other search engines) use similar technology to read' your sight and index it in their search results. If they can't see it they can't index it and no one will ever see your site (Nb. Google cannot see the content contained in Flash files). Hand coding a site will ensure the site will meet these requirements and most designers will do just that. On top of this designers can install Google analytics code (so you can see how many people are looking at your site), implement sophisticated content management systems (so you can change the content yourself) and handle issues such as hosting and email setup.
To summarise, a designer will ensure your site is sending the right message to your customers, looksexactly how you want it to look, performsexactly how you want it perform and meets all the current industry standards.
