Why choose an expedition cruise over a land package or chose both depending upon the destination
Some time ago, when the cruise industry was in its infant stages, cruise lines used this particular statement to get people to go on a cruise "just think about unpacking once". And that statement certainly drove a lot of people to go on their first cruise. Some of them are perfectly happy to use either one or different cruise lines every year for their yearly vacations. Some, though, never got the cruise bug and went back to other types of vacations, enjoying more of an active or adventurous land tour to exotic destinations. And perhaps their adventures made up for the daily packing and unpacking that they had to do changing locations. Of course, the thrill of adventure, traveling in a out of the way country, such as Nepal, or Mongolia, spending the nights in small villages in yurts, for example, usually would make up for the mundane activity of carrying your belongings from place to place.
Of course, some of these destination are worthwhile just on their own, and the activities one participate in whilst there, are usually the highlight of this type of travel. This, of course, cannot be duplicated by any voyage or journey on a ship.
However, ship based activities more than any other travel mode, offer also the thrill of adventure, crossing wild rivers, climbing and trekking along mountainous landscapes, and visiting distant villages, such as those in far away Chukotka along the Bering Sea. And what really makes these activities even more exciting is that in most cases you could not get to these places in any other way. So our title should not be about choices but more about alternating exotic land based experiences, with expedition cruise exploration depending upon the destination. Thus a destination can be visited in two ways, land and shore based journeys of discovery. Or even better, one could add a land package to an expedition cruise, either before or after.
A perfect example of this choice is the State of Alaska. Traveling on land can be rugged and varied. There is no doubt that national areas like the Yukon or Denali National Park are enthralling destinations where activities such as hiking, kayaking and climbing can be enjoyed.
Cruising along the Alaska coastline can bring the joys of watching the antics of whales and pods of sea lions. Then there are the enormous glaciers to be viewed for example in Glacier Bay, where glaciers show their magnificence, only to be observed from a ship. Cruising alongside the coast of Canada and the Queen Charlotte Islands bring tears to most people eyes. Yet, this can only be observed from a ship.
Same destination, different viewpoints, and interestingly, in this particular destination, people choose their first voyage usually to be a cruise and not a land package, because the ship has better accommodations and a choice of on board activities.
Yet, it is the more adventurous soul who perhaps after or before taking a land package would choose an expedition cruise to view those places they saw ashore from a different perspective. For them the thrill of perhaps watching huge brown bears roam along the coastlines of Kamchatka, while observing a Steller Sea Eagle soar across the sky, and following birds from the top deck of an expedition ship, is heaven here on earth. This visiting of places far beyond an existing road structure is brining heaven to their earth. And again the land package or the expedition cruise would be complimentary experiences taken by the same people, to broaden their understanding and enjoyment of a specific destination.
