It is not surprising that millions of people the world over have a dull smile. You may be one of them who covers their teeth when you smile or laugh with joy. Your dull teeth simply do not look attractive. It doesn't matter if your teeth are perfectly aligned or slightly crooked, when the color is dull or yellowish is just looks unattractive.
A billion dollar industry is founded on the need of people to have brighter teeth. Literally hundreds of teeth whitening products can now be purchased on line and over-the-counter at drug and retail stores. For those people with some money to spend, a medical solution may be the route to go. Many dental offices now offer various teeth whitening procedures.
Why buy a brighter smile?
A brighter smile has many benefits. It effects how well we are treated at work, for instance. It effects whether we get the attention of someone we are trying to attract to a relationship with you. With a flashing white smile you will always be ready for that impromtu photo that you now avoid because your teeth are not looking their brightest. If giving your best smile is not something you are comfortable doing, you should consider teeth whitening products, or a trip to the dentist, or try a simple home remedy - baking powder. Yes, baking powder works wonders when used properly.
Your smile is the most natural expression you have to show just what kind of a person you are. Your smile can reveal someone who is confident or someone who is self conscious and ashamed of their appearance. For a confident person, smiling is instantaneous and done without any thought at all. For others, their smile is hesitant, even guarded, because their smile is just not attractive.
Your smile is the outward expression of who you are inside. Smiling is an important tool. In addition to demonstrating to someone that you are attracted to them, a brighter smile can indicate your support for something positive that someone is doing. Your smile can also be uplifting to someone who is faced with a personal trial. Not having a bright smile is denying you these benefits and much more.
What to do about it? Make an investment in your smile, an investment that will give you a better life and better relationships with those people who matter to you. The only question left to answer is - Can you afford it?
Let's consider the most expensive solutions first.
Obviously, getting a medical solution will cost the most. Health insurance usually does not cover any kind of cosmetic procedure because these are not medically necessary, that is, these procedures are not life or death matters. They are simply treated the same as a "nose job" or other cosmetic surgery. Going to a dentist can include teeth implants, caps, or what I call Hollywood Teeth. Hollywood Teeth is a set of teeth that slip over your normal teeth or replace missing teeth and are only worn when one is in the public eye. They are a cheaper alternative to full scale dental work. To give you some idea of cost, I actually had one made for a single tooth that cost just under $500. Whichever of these you choose, you will be faced with a medical bill that could run into several thousands that will be paid out of pocket.
The next level of treatment can be chemicals, even light, applied by your dentist. These are in-office procedures as well and could cost several thousands for a complete course of treatment. Again, because these are not medically required for health, you will pay for them out-of-pocket.
Chemicals are not always safe even though they are performed under the care of a dentist. A good dentist will advise you that, while your teeth may end up looking whiter, there is a risk that prolonged use of whitening chemicals may actually damage your teeth over the long term due to the corrosive properties of the chemicals. You may also suffer some gum irritation and your teeth could become more sensitive because of the process. In extreme cases, some people have literally become almost violently ill from accidentally swallowing the whitening chemicals.
Except for trying baking powder at home, the cheapest and relatively safest solution is over-the-counter products. However, as with any product that you use on your body, follow directions to the letter to avoid any negative side effects. Understand also that these drug store and on line solutions are not as effective as going to a dentist or cosmetic surgeon. They take much longer to show any results and can be time consuming, even a daily burden.
