It is a well known fact that the United States is the preferred destination for all immigrants. Though an immigrant can visit and work in the US with a visa or green card, becoming a US citizen has its own advantages.
US laws does give many rights to citizens and to non- citizens as well. But certain privileges go only to the citizens. US citizens have the right to vote in the federal elections, reunite families, bring their fiance through the K1 visa or bring their spouse and children under the K-3,K-4 visa category. They can sponsor them for a green card. US citizens who have unmarried children under the age of 21 can sponsor them as "Immediate Relatives". Another important factor is that only US citizens are eligible to sponsor their parents for a green card (permanent residence). Additionally, A US citizen's children may also be eligible for US citizenship based on parents' status as a US citizen.
Further more, there is no restriction for US citizens to enter/ exit the US. The period of time US citizens can spend overseas is not restricted. It is also convenient for travel as certain countries do not need visas of US citizens. Having a U.S. Passport (which only US citizen can apply), one can get assistance from the U.S. Government when abroad. Citizens will also be eligible for federal jobs in the US. and can become elected officials.
If a green card holder is accused of any illegal activity, he/she can be deported whereas an US citizen has the right to an attorney and a fair trial and need not face the deportation process.
To qualify for American citizenship, there are a few eligibility requirements to be met. You should be 18 years or older and be a permanent resident (have a Green Card) now and during all of the past 5 years. You must have resided in the US for a continuous period of time before filing the American citizenship application. If you are not married to a US citizen, you must have resided in the U.S. for a period of five years (continuous) after being allowed to the U.S. as a permanent resident. If you are married to a U.S. citizen, the requirement is three years after admission to the U.S. as a permanent resident. Another requirement is that you must have physically resided in the U.S. for one half the period of continuous residence requirement within the period required for continuous residence. You must have resided in your current state for at least three months before filing the American citizenship application. Additionally, you should not have broken any US immigration law and also that you should not have been ordered to leave the US at any time. You should also be able to show at least five years of good moral character and also that you believe in the principles of the US constitution.
