Why We Repay Integrity Through Our Purchases
We are not robots. When we go shopping we are not following a program put into our minds by someone else. We are following our own inner guidance, listening to advice, looking for deals, thinking of finances and many other considerations, from practical to frivolous. This is why a growing market for fair trade products has been catching on throughout much of the world. What we are seeing evolving is the desire to make our purchases count, to pay what we would wish to be paid.
Whether a shopper encounters fair trade clothing, coffee, produce or any other kinds of items, the question is bound to arise as to what positive effects a purchase of such an item could create. The fact that people have gone to more than usual amount of effort and taken a bit of a risk on offering such a product might stand out. Or, perhaps, one might wonder if the little bit of extra money is worth it. Depending upon ones economic reality a purchase may or may not become a possibility. Yet even those of us on tighter budgets could benefit from trying out such ethically produced and marketed products. We can uplift our own realities by acting compassionately when shopping, as is true in any other part of our lives.
On the other side of this equation is the fact that we tend to repay integrity through our purchases. For example, if a mechanic is honest, trustworthy and straightforward they are likely to have a life long customer. They might not make as much per service but they will almost assuredly maintain a strong clientele. The same is true with our loyalty to retail stores that treat us right and which exude integrity in various ways. A spirit of integrity can be noticed in which products are offered, how customers are treated, how the sales staff operates in the store and various other ways. Little compliments to customers, offering occasional tips, and showing genuine interest in the lives of customers goes a long way in earning respect and loyalty.
Integrity is easy to spot in a retail store. Whether it is in the offerings presented (i.e. fair trade clothing as opposed to mass-merchandised options), the obvious respect for customers interests and needs, loyalty of sales staff or in an overall spirit of interest in helping others, integrity is a value all retailers should strive for and all customers should expect. For we need others to live up to their words, to value other people and to respect others contributions. If we have this we can have more than the usual shopping experiences. Life can become that much more meaningful as a result.
